In the hours after his first Champions League win as manager of Red Bull Salzburg in 2019, Jesse Marsch received so many texts and calls that his phone shut itself off.

There was a level of pride for Marsch’s win — the first for an American coach in the Champions League — in the voices of the Leipzig crew.

Marsch spoke glowingly about his time at Leipzig and all he had learned when he was there. A few days earlier, he had pondered whether there was a path for him to return to the Bundesliga one day. Marsch pointed to the coaches who had come before him at Salzburg and the steps they had taken after success in Austria: Adi Hutter, now with Eintracht Frankfurt; Roger Schmidt, Bayer Leverkusen and now PSV; Oscar Garcia, Saint-Etienne and Celta Vigo; and Marco Rose, now with Borussia Monchengladbach. Maybe, he too, would be next to move on. But if he did, he hoped it might be up the chain to Leipzig.

On Thursday, that opportunity came for Marsch when he was named manager of RB Leipzig. Marsch will have the difficult task of replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who was hired by Bayern Munich. It’s yet another door kicked down by Marsch, who will now become just the third American to manage in the Bundesliga. He will take over a side that last year reached the Champions League semi-finals. No American has ever coached a club with such lofty aspirations.

He has certainly grown his reputation at Salzburg by winning the domestic double and leading a team that put in impressive performances against the likes of Liverpool and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. On Saturday they’ll have a chance to win another Austrian Cup against LASK.

Marsch will not be wading into the calmest waters when he returns to Leipzig. This is not the coronation of a Red Bull-groomed coach ascending to the top job.

RB Leipzig’s biggest concern over the release of Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich was the defeatist message it sent to the players. Sporting director Markus Krosche made that point forcefully in internal discussions, but he was overruled by CEO Oliver Mintzlaff and will now leave the club in the summer.

It’d be wrong to describe the Leipzig dressing room as being demoralised by Nagelsmann’s exit. But one of the most urgent tasks for Marsch will be to recreate a sense of purpose. More specifically, the belief that RB can still be a potent disruptive force, a club going places rather than one that has hit a glass ceiling. These are not esoteric concerns. After the departure of Nagelsmann, Dayot Upamecano (both to Bayern) and Ibrahima Konate (expected to go to Liverpool), it’ll be that much harder for anyone in a position of power to convince a wantaway player that he’d be better served sticking around.

Captain Marcel Sabitzer, for one, has long been eyed up by Premier League teams. The 27-year-old central midfielder is out of contract in 2022 and could well be on his way if a suitable offer arrives. Left-back Marcel Halstenberg and Emil Forsberg, too, will have options since they have only two years left on their contracts. Keeper Peter Gulacsi has a release clause (reportedly €12.5 million) and there’s strong interest in the French duo of Nordi Mukiele and Christopher Nkunku, a previous target for Arsenal. Marsch cannot change the economic realities behind those prospective moves — there’s simply more money to be made elsewhere — but he needs to come up with a compelling sales pitch to counter the suspicion that RB are about to fall apart as a team.

Some personnel changes are both inevitable and welcome, on the other hand. Leipzig have already secured centre-backs Josko Gvardiol (Dinamo Zagreb) and Mohamed Simakan (Racing Strasbourg). There’s a strong chance that Zambian striker Patson Daka will move from Austria with Marsch to offer the kind of individual goalscoring threat that Leipzig have been missing since Timo Werner left for Chelsea last summer. In addition, Leipzig have high hopes for Hungarian prodigy Dominik Szoboszlai, another former Salzburg stalwart who is yet to feature for Leipzig after arriving injured in January. To integrate all these newcomers at a top-class Bundesliga side expected to reach the last 16 in the Champions League won’t be easy for a coach who will first have to get used to this level himself.

There could be wider structural issues, too. Following Krosche’s departure, Leipzig are currently without a sporting director; Mintzlaff has taken over those duties for the time being. The former long-distance runner is an extremely shrewd operator who has risen from being Rangnick’s media adviser to leading one of Germany’s most powerful clubs. But he’s not a football specialist with an eye for up-and-coming defenders from the lower regions of French football and beyond. Leipzig will only continue to succeed if they employ a strong talent spotter. The current vacuum is problematic for Marsch in particular. Ideally, sporting directors are the ones who appoint coaches in order to ensure an alignment of ideas. In this case, Marsch’s direct superior will only arrive after the event. RB must ensure that he really rates the American and gets on with him on a personal level to avoid potential tension and disagreements.

Marsch’s biggest problem, if you can call it that, is the calibre of his predecessor, however. Players who have worked with Nagelsmann talk of him as a Pep Guardiola-type figure, capable of showing players new dimensions of the game and improving them accordingly. Marsch has garnered much credit for his work at Salzburg, but as Rangnick’s assistant at Leipzig (2018-19), he was mostly known for his man-management and strong motivational streak. Some observers close to the club wonder whether he’s made up enough ground when it comes to the finer details of the game to captivate a dressing room that’s been subjected to Nagelsmann’s coaching for two years.

The 33-year-old is a tough act to follow — especially if he wins Leipzig’s first-ever trophy, the DFB Pokal, next month. Leipzig will contest the semi-final against lowly Werder Bremen on Friday night.

Marsch was heavily influenced by Rangnick; he’d rather be too aggressive than too passive. Under him, Salzburg constantly press and look to get vertical quickly. It is a flexible system, but one based on the group working together, always. That concept is as important as any tactical nuance.

“The power is in numbers, the power is in the organization of what we do,” Marsch said in a Q&A for The Coaches’ Voice. “We say a lot, we don’t just press to win the ball, we press to score goals. So then the movements and ideas of what happens once we win the ball and how direct and vertical we can play to go to goal wind up being really, really important.”

Marsch laughed when he thought back to the moment. It seemed such a far cry from where he was with Salzburg in 2019. But the lessons of those doubts will now carry over to Leipzig.

The trips were partly personal. Marsch and his wife, Kim, see value in the education that comes from experiencing different cultures. But the drives around East Germany were also crucial to the path Marsch saw for his career. He knew that in order to fully integrate himself into Leipzig and Europe — to become less of “the American” and more just another football coach on the continent who happens to be from the U.S. — he had to truly understand the culture.

“I almost feel like I’m an anthropologist or a sociologist,” Marsch said in the fall of 2019 while driving in Salzburg a couple of days before his first Champions League match. “What is it like in Leipzig, in Eastern Germany, to try to coach a team that wants to be the best in that league, with all the history of what East Germany is, what Leipzig is, what the league is, who the players are? Everything.”

For Marsch, managing has always started with the foundation of mentality. It’s different from the European style, he knows. But it’s who he is and he’s OK with that. It’s the bit of American mentality that he believes can add to the European way of doing things. If it can work at Leipzig, Marsch may be the latest proof that an American influence might not be such a bad thing in European football. In the Bundesliga, he will be joining New Jersey native Pellegrino Matarazzo, who has impressed during his time with VfB Stuttgart. He will also reunite with his former RBNY pupil, Tyler Adams, one of a wave of young Americans featuring for top Champions League clubs.

Not since Bob Bradley has an American coach been in such a spotlight. Matarazzo built his career as an assistant in the youth and reserve ranks in Germany before working his way to become a Bundesliga manager. But Marsch will carry with him the burden of proving an MLS-groomed coach is capable of success in one of Europe’s top leagues and with a team that has such high aspirations.

Bradley is one of the few Americans who understand the scrutiny that will follow Marsch simply because of where he was born. Bradley’s every decision, every word, was picked apart during his time at Swansea. He was given just 11 games before he was fired. But the former US men’s national team coach also played a big role in opening doors for Americans in Europe with his success at Stabaek, the near-promotion at Le Havre and his time with the Egyptian national team.

Marsch’s jump to Leipzig is yet another sign of the game’s growth on this side of the Atlantic. It’s why he probably isn’t too intimidated by carrying on the success of Nagelsmann, or even the burden of expectations at RB Leipzig. He’s already being asked to serve as caretaker for an entire country’s reputation in the sport — or at least that of his colleagues’ value in the industry, and their dreams of similar opportunities.
