After a training session during Poland’s campaign at the European Championship last summer, Brighton’s new signing Kacper Kozlowski was involved in a conversation with then-national team manager Paulo Sousa and their striker Robert Lewandowski.

Succeeding an iconic figure such as Lewandowski in the hearts and minds of a nation is a high bar to set for an 18-year-old.

Yet in one respect, midfielder Kozlowski is already ahead of the talismanic centre-forward.

Brighton paid around £8 million to buy Kozlowski from Pogon Szczecin, currently the nearest challengers to Lech Poznan — one of 33-year-old Lewandowski’s former clubs — at the summit of the Polish top flight midway through their season.

Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Ajax were among other clubs linked with Kozlowski. He attracted “a lot of interest”, according to a source close to the player, but has agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Brighton until June 2026.

This is especially true of Poland.

Kozlowski’s international team-mate and fellow midfielder Jakub Moder has established himself as a regular in Graham Potter’s Premier League squad since he was signed from Lech Poznan in October 2020.

Kozlowski eclipsed England’s Jude Bellingham as the youngest player at Euro 2020 when he was introduced as a 55th-minute substitute by Sousa in the 1-1 draw against Spain, just after Lewandowski equalised.

Zachodny says: “I remember talking to him straight after the game against Spain, when he came on for Mateusz Klich (the Leeds midfielder).

An earlier encounter at international level, with Bellingham as an opponent, highlighted the scale of Kozlowski’s potential.

“I saw him so many times for the youth national team,” Zachodny says. “There was a game, quite special, England Under-17s in the Syrenka Cup in September 2019, in the final.

Based in Szczecin, eight hours from capital city Warsaw, they are not among Poland’s most fashionable clubs but a focus on the academy and developing young talents has led to progression under their German coach Kosta Runjaic.

They have also previously borrowed Brighton’s former South Africa forward Percy Tau (who has since moved to Al-Ahly in Egypt) and young defender Alex Cochrane, who is on loan this season to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.
