There were thousands of red and yellow Catalan flags flying in the sunshine at the Nou Camp on Monday morning as Spain attacker Ferran Torres was presented as Barcelona’s new signing.

The numbers involved were quite a surprise though. The €1 billion release clause can be set aside as just some nice PR, but the reported salary of €11 million a year (before tax) is substantial. As is the fee of €55 million, which could rise with extras to €72 million. That is more than double what City paid for him in 2020 when Barca were also interested, but unable to compete for his signature due to their financial issues. Now they feel they can make the numbers work.

Alves, Torres and Morata would be three new players added to the squad in January, but that would not be all. The emergence of Gavi, 17, and Nico, who turned 20 on Monday, as key first-team options for Xavi has also caused an issue that needs to be resolved. The current board did make some useful cuts last summer — getting Lionel Messi’s €100 million a year cost off the books last summer was big. They loaned Antoine Griezmann to Atletico and Miralem Pjanic to Besiktas just to get them off their books. Senior players Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also, eventually, took voluntary pay cuts. That allowed for Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, Yusuf Demir and Luuk de Jong to be added within their squad limit for the season.

Barca still pay around €430 million a year in salaries — which is a lot. In recent months they used up whatever margin was left within the salary cap by agreeing new contracts for teenagers Ansu Fati and Pedri, and then by firing previous coach Ronald Koeman and adding Xavi and his staff.

Barca fans have had to become experts in the details of football finances, especially the concept of amortisation, an important factor in La Liga’s financial fair play calculations. The last €27 million chunk of Dembele’s €135 million transfer fee is being paid off across the current season’s budget.

The hope around the Nou Camp remains that Newcastle, or a similar club with loads of money they are keen to spend, will help them out. Alemany also has experience of such complex operations having been at Valencia when something similar was arranged for goalkeepers Neto and Jasper Cillessen.

Unsurprisingly, Juve have been mentioned in the Catalan press as a possible next club for Dembele. Meanwhile, Pjanic — currently on loan at Besiktas — is due back at the Nou Camp next summer, on a hefty contract until 2024. There really are no easy answers.

The midfield options remain plentiful, with 2021 Golden Boy Pedri back fit soon to give Xavi a welcome selection dilemma. The defence could also be better, with 38-year-old Alves a short-term solution to the problem position at right-back.

This would be quite a feat, considering Barca’s financial situation remains so dreadful. They owed €1.3 billion even before club socios voted in December to borrow another €1.5 billion to rebuild the Nou Camp and surrounding area. Such figures are awe-inspiring, but Laporta and other executives continue to maintain that all is under control. A €600 million refinancing deal with Goldman Sachs has helped ensure players’ wages are paid and the lights are kept on at the training ground and stadium (something which was not at all certain during the end of Bartomeu’s reign). The view within the club now is that, with the short-term situation stabilised, they must keep investing in the team to generate the revenues needed to help pay it all back in the end.

Sources have told The Athletic that conversations between the British investment company and the Catalan club are ongoing. Laporta again criticised this arrangement at Torres’ presentation this week, while leaving open the possibility of coming in were the terms on offer different.

Yet another complicating factor is that the Spanish government in December amended the law which said that boards of “member owned” Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna must provide deposits worth 15 per cent of their club’s annual budgets. This change was approved by Spain’s Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes), whose director-general is Albert Soler, a senior Barca executive from 2014 until last year.

The biggest of all would be Haaland, whose signing would really be proof that “Barca are back”, as Laporta stated so confidently on Monday.
